Famagusta district court on Friday ordered a 23-year-old man remanded in custody for four days as police investigate an alleged attempt to facilitate someone to remain in Cyprus illegally, obtaining goods under false pretenses and demanding property by making threats.
Police said a 33-year-old woman, who is a recognized trafficking victim, had reported that the suspect had asked her for €6000 to arrange for her to marry an EU citizen so that she could stay in Cyprus.
She gave him €4,500 and her travel documents. However, a few days later he told her that there would be no wedding. He refused to give her back the money and her documents.
He also managed to get her to give him another €5000 so that he would return her travel documents.
