Around 40 Syrian refugees arrived within the Republic of Cyprus on Friday, including ladies and children on the way to a migrant facility in provincial Nicosia. According to police, around 40 undocumented transients were detained after crossing from the north into the south within the Astromeritis region on Friday morning around 6:30 am.
Police told K news the group included 17 women and children while the travelers were described as presumptive refugees from Syria .
The refugees are being taken to Pournara migrant camp in Kokkinotrimithia, rural Nicosia, where they are expected to be tested for the coronavirus prior to being admitted to the detention facility.
Late last month, 15 Syrian refugees including one woman reached Cypriot soil while 10 others were spotted in a boat some 8 nautical miles off Cape Greco.
Coast guard officers had tried to persuade the undocumented travelers to turn back to their country of departure, citing fears over the corona virus pandemic.
