Coronavirus: 17 new cases announced on Monday

Seventeen new cases of Covid-19 were detected on Monday, the health ministry said, calling on people to stay alert citing small clusters in all districts.

The new cases were detected among 2,465 lab tests.

Four of the new cases were people tested as part of the government testing programme in the Larnaca district. All four got tested last Saturday at the Mackenzy area.

Among them one man works at the Bank of Cyprus outlet in Livadhia in Larnaca and had presented with fever and myalgia. One case is a player of second division football club Asil Lysis. Another is a close contact  of an Asil Lysis player who is a relative of a player of Ethnikos Achnas who was tested positive last week. The fourth person has no symptoms.

Among Monday’s new cases is another official of Nea Salamina football club.  

Two more people were Bulgarian nationals who live permanently in Cyprus and who returned from their country some two weeks ago. They turned up positive after getting tested for the second time two days prior to the expiration of their 14-day self-isolation.

Another case was a British tourist who arrived in Cyprus on September 18 and was on holiday in the Famagusta district. He developed symptoms on Sunday such as fever, myalgia, headache and sore throat.

Four people tested positive who arrived on Sunday from abroad: one from Vilnius and three from Bucharest. 

One person works at the same company in Limassol where seven more cases were detected – five Czech nationals and two Cypriots. This cluster now numbers eight cases.  

Two people are close family contact of the high school pupil from Limassol who was found positive on Sunday.  

Two people are contacts of persons who were found positive to the virus.  

There are currently 15 patients at the Famagusta general hospital, four of which in the high dependency unit. 

The total is now at 1,713.
