Agia Napa serial rapist arrested for 3 rape cases

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man who has reportedly admitted to raping three tourist women in Agia Napa between April 18 and mid-May, the CNA reported on Tuesday.

Police had received complaints from three women tourists that as they were walking late at night while intoxicated, they had been approached by a man who held them in an embrace and led them to a dark place where he raped them.

Police examined CCTV footage, particularly of the areas where, according to the allegations, the rapes are said to have taken place.

Police presented visual stills of the suspect from which one of the complainants identified the man as the rapist.

Members of the police subsequently showed the photo door-to-door in Agia Napa until a member of the public recognised the individual pictured, gave the man’s identity and information about his whereabouts.

The suspect is a 22-year-old Syrian national who arrived in Cyprus illegally and has requested political asylum according to local news reports.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to the police that he walked about at rape of all three of the tourists on Monday and appeared before Famagusta District Court on Tuesday where he was remanded in custody for six days.
